We left the boat and flew east to Romania to begin our hiking adventure in the Carpathian Mountains.
The first day was a long van ride from Bucharest to the Sucevita valley. We are about 20km from the Ukrainian border.

The second day of our MTSobek guided hike was lovely. We took the van up the road a bit (to skip a road walk) and hiked about 5 miles on the Via Transylvania to our lunch spot overlooking the Sucevita Monastery.

It is definitely fall here. The leaves are changing and the colors are amazing.

We had a great view of the monastery during lunch.

The monastery has defensive walls because Romania was on the front lines of the long Christian conflict with the Ottoman Empire. After a very steep descent we visited the Monastery. Outside..

… and in.

And it is an active monastery but the nuns do not like having their picture taken. And they look generally unhappy about the whole tourist thing.
The frescos are amazing but I think the artist messed up a bit on this one….

There is definitely a leg or two missing.
Wow. Fall leaves and gorgeous frescoes. Enjoy.
